Ontario’s Graduated Licensing System Explained: G1, G2, and G Licences

If you’re learning to drive in Ontario, the licensing process can feel confusing at first. Ontario uses a Graduated Licensing System (GLS) designed to help new drivers gain experience gradually while staying safe on the road.

This guide breaks down each licence level (G1, G2, and G), what’s required at each stage, and how to move through the system as smoothly — and safely — as possible.

Step 1: The G1 Licence (Beginner Level)

The G1 licence is your first step toward becoming a fully licensed driver.

How to Get Your G1

To obtain your G1, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old

  • Pass a vision test

  • Pass a written knowledge test covering road signs and traffic rules

G1 Driving Rules

With a G1, you must:

  • Drive with a fully licensed G driver who has at least 4 years of experience

  • Maintain zero blood alcohol level

  • Drive only between 5 a.m. and midnight

  • Avoid 400-series highways and high-speed roads, unless accompanied by a certified driving instructor

The G1 stage focuses on learning the basics: steering, braking, signalling, lane positioning, and awareness.

Step 2: The G2 Licence (Intermediate Level)

After holding your G1 for 12 months, you can take your first road test to earn your G2.
If you complete a Ministry-approved Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course, you may take the test after 8 months instead.

What the G2 Road Test Includes

The G2 test evaluates:

  • Starting, stopping, and turning

  • Lane changes

  • Obeying signs and signals

  • Parking (parallel, reverse, uphill/downhill)

  • General vehicle control and awareness

G2 Driving Privileges

With a G2, you can:

  • Drive without a supervising driver

  • Drive on all roads, including highways

  • Continue building real-world driving experience

However, restrictions still apply:

  • Zero blood alcohol level

  • Passenger limits for drivers under 20 (especially late at night)

The G2 stage is about confidence, consistency, and decision-making in real traffic conditions.

Step 3: The Full G Licence

After holding your G2 for at least 12 months, you can take your final road test to earn your full G licence.

What the G Road Test Focuses On

The G test emphasizes:

  • Highway driving

  • Merging and lane changes at higher speeds

  • Safe following distances

  • Defensive driving skills

  • Hazard awareness

Unlike the G2 test, parking manoeuvres are usually not the focus — the examiner wants to see how you handle higher-speed, real-world driving situations.

Once you pass, you’ll receive a full G licence, with no graduated restrictions.

How Long Does the Full Process Take?

Licence Stage Minimum Time
G1 12 months (8 with BDE)
G2 12 months
Total 20–24 months
